David Steiner, MD

One of the founders of APPA, Dr. David Steiner has practiced psychiatry in Aiken since 1992. Dr. Steiner is Board Certified
in Psychiatry and sees children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. Dr. Steiner completed a Fellowship in Geriatric Neuropsychiatry
and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of dementias such as Alzheimer's disease and associated behavioral problems.
Dr. Steiner graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed his residency in psychiatry at the
University of Virginia. He also specializes in diagnostic evaluations and medical management of multiple psychiatric illnesses.
Dr. Steiner is the clinical director of the Geriatric Psychiatry unit at Aiken Regional Medical Centers Aurora Pavilion
John Alex Allen, MD

Dr. Allen graduated from the University of Georgia and then from Tulane University School of Medicine. He then joined the
United States Army while furthering his trainning in adult and child and adolescent psychiatry. His child and adolescent
fellowship was through the combines program with Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center and the Medical College of Georgia.
Dr. Allen treats children, adolescents and adults. He is board certified in Adult and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Barbara Snyder, LISW

Barbara Snyder, a Licensed Independent Social Worker, has been counseling children and families, individuals and couples
in Aiken since 1981. She has special interests in adoptive and blended families, women's issues, trauma recovery, and management
of in-home geriatric care. She is Board Certified in Clinical Social Work and received her training at Syracuse University.

Patrica Ryan, LISW

Patricia Ryan is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who works with couples and individuals 16 and older. She is
particularly interested in personal identity, relationship, anger management, and recovery from childhood trauma issues. She
routinely works with depression and anxiety. She holds a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Kansas and
is qualified to give the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator@. She has taught courses on type and identity formation at Wichita State
University in Wichita, Kansas, and has published articles on type and education. Before becoming a social worker, Pat spent
16 years teaching math, mostly at the college level.

Nan Moorer, LISW

A co-founder of APPA, Nan Moorer has been an active member of the Aiken mental health community since 1981. Since that time
she has practiced psychotherapy in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. She specializes in treating trauma survivors
and women's issues, but also provides therapy for a variety of other problems. Ms. Moorer completed her education, after
receiving a Masters Degree in Social Work at the University of South Carolina, with an internship at the South Carolina Department
of Mental Health and the USC student health services.
Carl Carlin, LPC

Carl Carlin has worked in the Aiken area since 1991 and is also one of the original members of APPA. After 22 years in the
United States Army Medical Service, he worked for 2 years at the Aiken Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment before joining
APPA. In 1979, he received a Masters Degree in Counseling from Ball State University and is both a Licensed Professional
Counselor and a Certified Addictions Counselor. Mr. Carlin specializes in the treatment of addictions, depression, and relationship
problems.

James Donovan, DSW

Jim Donovan received a Bachelor of Science in teaching from Springfield College and a Master in Secondary Education at
Columbia Teachers College. He then obtained a Masters in Social Work from SUNY at Stoney Brook and a Doctorate in Social
Work at Adelphi University. Dr. Donovan brings experience in many areas to APPA. His areas of special interest are individual,
couples and group psychotherapy

Michelle Knapik-Smith, APRN, BC

Michelle Knapik-Smith joined APPA after practicing independently for several years. She is an advanced practice psychiatric
nurse. She received her Masters degree in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia. Her trainning
was done at the Medical College of Georgia and Aiken Regional Medical Centers Aurora Pavilion, giving her both inpatient and
outpatient experience. Ms. Smith is Board Certified as an Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist. Her interests include individual
therapy with children, adolescents, adults and families. In addition, she has presciption writing privledges in the state
of South Carolina; therfore, she is able to prescribe many psychiatric medications when needed for her patients.

Jim Poole, LISW

Jim Poole recently relocated to Aiken from Connecticut, joining APPA in January, 2007. Jim holds graduate degrees in counseling
from the University of Hartford and social work from the University of Connecticut. He is a licensed clinical social worker.
In Connecticut he maintained a private practice and worked as a clinician in a mental health clinic. Jim brings over 25
years of diverse experience in community mental health. His focus is individual and couples therapy. His areas of special
interest are trauma recovery, grief and loss, and men's issues.
